The history of the Global Leadership University is deeply tied with the life story of Otgonbat Barkhuu who is the Founder and Chairman of Board of the Trustees of the institution. Mr Otgonbat is an entrepreneur, politician and a best-selling author of several books on studying in the United States and Taiwan. He is a frequent speaker on leadership and education in Mongolia and recently, he has been lecturing on authentic and adaptive leadership topics for a variety of audiences in Mongolia and abroad. After graduating from Dickinson State University in the United States with a BS in Business Administration, he continued to earn his Graduate Diploma in International Travel/Tourism Management at the University of Queensland in Australia as a Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholar. After ten years of setting up his own university and being active in Mongolian politics, Mr Otgonbat graduated from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government in 2016 with a Master of Public Administration degree (MC/MPA Mason Fellow) and at Harvard, he was selected as several fellows at Harvard Graduate School Leadership Institute and the Center for Public Leadership at the Kennedy School of Government. Mr Otgonbat was also New Generation Fellow at the East-West Center at the University of Hawaii.
When he returned home back to Mongolia in 2005 from Australia, he started a non-governmental organization called the Global Leadership Foundation to assist dedicated Mongolian students to study in the United States on a scholarship program and through his assistance, over 4500 Mongolian students studied in the United States, South Korea and Taiwan since 2005. Next to the Global Leadership Foundation, he started an English Language School to offer preparatory courses in English for those who wish to study overseas. In 2007, the Global Leadership University was established to offer degree programs in business administration. Since then, the Global Leadership University grew from a recruitment and language training organization into a vibrant institution of higher learning that offers unique opportunities for Mongolian and international students.
The Global Leadership University has distinguished itself from others by its scale of internationalization. GLI has managed to develop exchange programs with many prestigious universities in the United States, Korea and Taiwan offering opportunities for students to participate in 2+2 and 1+1 joint degree and exchange programs. Only GLU students have the opportunity to study abroad within an extensive network of over 160 global partner institutions. The GLU promoted the concept of leadership-centered education for its students by requiring community service hours and offering personal development extracurricular programs.
Today, GLU offers undergraduate and graduate programs in medicine, business and humanities. There are four schools: School of Business, School of Medicine, School of Nursing and School of Humanities. The current student enrollment is approximately 800 students and the number will double within next two years as the institution continues to build itself into the future. In 2012, GLU has also established a senior high school called the New Century Leadership High School, which has become a secondary school offering K-12 programs in 2015. GLU has celebrated its 10th anniversary and 5th anniversary of the secondary school on 14th December 2017. At its 10th anniversary, GLU has defined its vision for the next 10 years as an institution that prepares and empowers the next generation of entrepreneurs who will pave the path for Mongolia’s economic prosperity and competitiveness. GLU will not only continue to be a leading institution of higher learning in Mongolia but also strive to be a truly global university that empowers students and its stakeholders to bring forward positive changes in their communities and tackling the toughest challenges that world has ever faced today. GLU understands that in the age of digital transformation and the rise of technology revolution and the flattening of the world, GLU graduates must be prepared to lead in all areas of society with their distinctive competencies and skills and most importantly, through their moral education and leadership skills. Therefore, as a graduate of Harvard, President Otgonbat has championed a special leadership development program for all GLU students adopting the authentic and adaptive leadership concepts practiced at Harvard Kennedy and Harvard Business Schools. GLU’s schools have started to adopt case-based teaching methodologies and Harvard-style learning programs and field experiences.
Within last ten years of its existence, GLU has managed to invest into real estate and land allowing the necessary facility to accommodate over one thousand students and plants to invest 5 million USD for a twelve story extension building of the institution which will allow at least 2000 students to be enrolled in the institution’s various programs. The strategic plan of the institution also targets investments into dormitory, sports and arts hall buildings and a university hospital project within next 5-10 years.
In terms of program offerings, the Global Leadership University will launch more business, engineering and medical related degree programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Located in the metropolitan city of Ulaanbaatar, the Global Leadership University is in a competitive position to capitalize on opportunities to serve the community surrounding us.
